For 94 years 650 AM WSM has been a leader in Country Radio. On October 5, 1925, WSM radio made its first official broadcast from the fifth floor of the National Life and Accident Insurance Company building located at 7th and Union in Nashville, Tennessee. The call letters, WSM, came from the National Life and Accident Insurance Company’s motto, “We Shield Millions.” WSM featured a wide variety of live entertainment through the years, including classical music, radio drama, gospel music, and renowned shows like the Waking Crew and Sunday Down South. Famous entertainers such as Snooky Lanson, Dinah Shore, Ralph Emery and Pat Sajak all got their start at WSM. In 1950, WSM announcer David Cobb coined the term “Music City USA” and the moniker is now the official nickname for Nashville. On November 28, 1925, WSM station director George D Hay introduced old-time fiddler, Uncle Jimmy Thompson, to the WSM audience. The response was so great that the Saturday night “Grand Ole Opry” was born. Overflowing crowds forced the Opry show to leave the WSM broadcast studios for a series of larger venues. In June 1943, the show moved to the Ryman Auditorium, where it stayed until 1974, when it moved to the Opryland complex. The Grand Ole Opry has become synonymous with country music and led Nashville’s emergence as the country music capital of the world. The show in its entirety is still broadcast live over 650 AM WSM every week. On the radio, WSM can be heard in 38 states and parts of Canada thanks to its 50,000-watt clear channel signal. On the internet, WSM can be heard at WSM online dot com. You can even access WSM on your mobile device by downloading our free mobile app. Follow WSM Radio on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter for behind-the-scenes photos, contests, and special studio performances. You can even check out the WSM Channel on YouTube for access to a gallery of our online-only digital series. WSM continues to enrich its audience daily by playing only the best in Classic Country, Bluegrass, and Americana music, and has gone on to become a broadcasting giant in the radio industry…being a friend to hundreds of thousands of fans. The station has won hundreds of broadcasting awards and was named Country Radio Station of the Century by “Radio & Records” in 2000. WSM’s personalities are nationally recognized figures in country music, and its listeners range from U.S. presidents to Country Music Hall of Famers, to artists climbing the charts toward their first number one hit. You never know when a famous listener might drop in for a visit. With the ever-changing ways that listeners can consume media, WSM found it imperative to expand a digital footprint and in September of 2017 launched the first in a series of new streaming stations, Route 650. Route 650 is a 24/7 streaming channel that is a celebration of Americana music. Including, current Americana artist like Jason Isbell, Margo Price and Amanda Shires. Plus, the founders of Americana like Kris Kristofferson and John Prine. Route 650 is unlike any other Americana station in the country as it is programmed and curated by the talent of WSM AM; featuring exclusive content hosted by WSM personalities Eric Marcum and Charlie Mattos. In the spirit of WSM’s historic impact in Country Music, the new digital initiatives are proving to be an outlet to bring new audiences into the fold and preserve the rich history for generations to come. Ross Copperman and Nicolle Galyon Honored as “2020 Champions of the Year”; Performances from Michael Ray, Emily Weisband & Blessing Offor Hosted by CMT’s Leslie Fram, the evening honored GRAMMY-nominated songwriters and producers Ross Copperman and Nicolle Galyon as the “2020 Champions of the Year.” The pair were celebrated for their tireless work to champion music education and their commitment to giving back to their hometown music programs in Virginia and Kansas, respectively. “The award for me is the gift I get to give to my hometown. It’s my everything,” said Galyon, referencing Sterling, Kansas. She was introduced by Ben Vaughn, President & CEO, Warner/Chappell, who shared heartfelt sentiments about her authenticity, dedication, and unparalleled talent that has touched so many others. Galyon expressed how honored and humbled she was for the honor and her gratitude that funds were allowing a creative outlet for students, something she herself needed at an early age. “What I was wanting was someone to hand me a blank page and ask me what I wanted to put on it,” she shared. Copperman reiterated her sentiments and praised the work of both SongFarm.org and Save The Music to give students opportunities and tools to succeed. “This whole thing is not about me at all. It’s about Save The Music.” He was introduced by friend and colleague, Josh Van Valkenburg, Senior Vice President, Nashville A&R, Sony/ATV, who echoed Copperman’s selfless nature and influence on the industry and beyond, particularly with students at his alma mater in Roanoke, Virginia. The most moving speech of the night came from Steve Franco, Copperman’s drama teacher at Glenvar High School, who talked glowingly about Copperman and the impact he has had on students through SongFarm.org, co-founded alongside GRAMMY award winner F. Reid Shippen. “He doesn’t just talk about it, he does it,” said Franco, referencing the Copperman’s mentorship and the full recording studio recently donated to the school. “Magic doesn’t happen unless you give students the tools,” he continued, before introducing two Glenvar students, Tyler Johnson and John Strausbaugh, who were on-hand to share their personal experiences with SongFarm.org and snippets of music they’ve been able to create in the donated recording studio. Franco wrapped up his highly emotional speech by thanking both Galyon and Copperman for pushing students toward their fullest potential, giving them wings to fly and providing them with the necessary tools for discovery, self-worth, and a creative outlet through music. The evening also included many noteworthy performances, including singer-songwriter Michael Ray who performed his new single, “Her World or Mine” and also shared the healing impact music had on his life at an early age. Gareth Leach Releases Brilliant “Down the Rabbit Hole” Music Video
countrymusicnewsblog.com | Wednesday, 19 February 2020 20:36:06
Just recently, Gareth Leach dropped his latest singles (double A) Down the Rabbit Hole and Old Crow Feather landing at #4 on the iTunes Country Singles chart, lifted from his forthcoming album. Alongside that, came the official music video for Down the Rabbit Hole, produced and directed by Gareth’s talented wife, Jade Robinson, and features family members, including their own children, nieces and nephews. WATCH THE MUSIC VIDEO FOR “DOWN THE RABBIT HOLE” BELOW Gareth’s debut album Death & Taxes launched him out of the relatively unknown and into the Australian country and alt-country music scene as a heart-on-your-sleeve, introspective and honest singer-songwriter. Dealing with personal struggles, social fears and anxieties, the two songs are a sneak peak in to some of the themes of the new album. Gareth on “Down the Rabbit Hole” — “As a schoolteacher and father, I have seen and have become increasingly concerned with the mental health of our kids. Growing up in an age where technology is so deeply integrated in to every life, especially through social media, the aftermath being a generation of people growing up with addictions to their devices and without really strong connections to their community and people in the real world causing a scary rise in childhood depression and anxiety. At first, I was angry with these kids and couldn’t understand why they were so obsessed with their devices and technology. Then I began to look around and realised that there is so much bad modeling of behavior to these kids from their parents – US! We grew up with very little education about such things and as a result you see parents and adults with their heads buried in their phones or devices all the time. We’re too busy scrolling through newsfeeds and comparing lives with everyone around them and their projection of “perfect”, “successful” and “happy”, so much so that we are not fully present at our kids footy games, school concerts, dance recitals, and the list goes on. And we’re nearly all guilty of it. This song is a reminder of this scary reality of us as a society getting so far lost “Down the Rabbit Hole” that we are neglecting to emotionally foster our future – the kids. Musically set to upbeat yet dark bluegrassy instrumentation, the purpose of this song is to slap the listener in the face and say, “Hey, listen up. We need to have a talk!””

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Chase Rice dropped by “Inside Studio G” today, February 17, to announce that he will be the special guest joining Garth Brooks this Saturday, February 22, at the Detroit Lions’ Ford Field. The announcement brings full circle a story that began last summer When Rice stopped by the “Entertainment Tonight” broadcast from Downtown Nashville during CMA Fest, he was surprised with a special co-host – his lifelong idol, Garth Brooks. While chatting about Rice’s goal of someday playing the stadium across the river, Brooks made quite the proposal: “Let’s do a deal, okay? Let’s say if we ever did play Nissan Stadium, you want to open that show?” Watch the special moment HERE. Turns out, Brooks was eager to make that deal a reality sooner than later and instead invited Rice to open his stadium show this weekend in Detroit, Michigan. “Growing up, Garth was it for me,” explains Rice. “He was the first concert I ever saw as a kid growing up in North Carolina, and like I told him when he surprised me on set – he’s the reason I play country music today. countrymusicnewsblog.com | Saturday, 15 February 2020 20:19:49
And Gives a Heartfelt Thanks to Thousands of Volunteers NASHVILLE, TN (February 14, 2020) It’s Valentine’s Day and Country Music’s “Wildcard” superstar, Miranda Lambert, wanted to take the opportunity to thank the thousands of volunteers she challenged to “Pledge to Volunteer” at their local animal rescue. By volunteering, the shelter they helped was automatically registered to be in the running to receive one of ten $1,000 MuttNation Foundation grants. In addition, volunteers were entered for the grand prize of concert tickets and a meet-and-greet with Miranda at an upcoming performance. Lambert, who began volunteering at rescue shelters as a teenager, said “Shelter pets have the biggest hearts and I wanted to show them some extra love on Valentine’s Day. We started the Pledge to Volunteer last year and had nearly 500 people, which was great. This year, over 2,000 MuttNation supporters joined the challenge, and I want to send out a huge ‘thank you’ to all of them. It’s amazing to have that kind of a response because shelters everywhere rely so heavily on support from their communities.” MuttNation congratulates Andrea Shike of Wisconsin, the grand prize winner of concert tickets and a meet-and-greet with Miranda, along with the 10 grant recipient shelters and all the dedicated volunteers who made it happen. MuttNation encourages everyone who has the time to volunteer – and, of course, to adopt from their local shelter, too!

Doug McCormick Gets Set for Daytona Green Flag with Latest Release “Earnhardt”
countrymusicnewsblog.com | Thursday, 13 February 2020 20:45:10
NASHVILLE (FEBRUARY 12, 2020) – Grass roots, rural country music is how Doug McCormick prefers to describe his music, and with the release of a new single, “Earnhardt” he continues to drive home that point. McCormick said he makes music that both tells his own story but also relates to a large group of people. This song is no different. The bond between father and son is as strong as fiddles and steel guitar. “Of all the people you’d like to sit down and have a beer with, Dale’s at the top of a lot of people’s list. For me, this song is a look back on some incredible father-son memories and most important it’s a humble tip of the hat to the massive impact Dale Earnhardt Sr. made on this world,” McCormick said. LISTEN TO THE NEW TUNE BELOW Growing up in the Carolinas, NASCAR is a way of life. That rings true for McCormick and his fan base. The opening verse of the song alludes to that time spent with his father on race day. “As a kid growing up in a Carolina farm town in the 90s, Sunday races were just a part of life,” he said. “Dad always had the race on. He could be outside working on cars or recovering from a long week in the textile mill. It didn’t matter. If it was Sunday, the race was on.” As a kid who grew up just down the road from Darlington Raceway, McCormick was accustomed to seeing the greats come through his hometown race track. Even when he wasn’t able to see the cars, he could hear them. “I have some incredible memories of going to the races with my dad. Even when we weren’t able to make the race, we’d walk out in our back yard and listen to the cars run around the track,” he said. “I didn’t think much of it then; that’s just the way it was. However, looking back on it now, I can say NASCAR was undeniably a part of the culture that raised me.” One year shy of two decades since the crash which took the life of one of NASCAR’s greats, McCormick said releasing a song like this has a special meaning. “It’s more than just what he was able to accomplish on the track. Dale Earnhardt Sr. embodied qualities every blue collar American admires,” he said. “It’s his firm handshake, look you in the eye, do anything for you, ain’t gonna take nothing off of you, and win at all costs approach to life that still resonates with us all.” That’s why McCormick said now is the perfect time to put a song like this out. He said the moment he and co-writer Lance Carpenter finished the song, they both knew they had something special. “I began playing it out on the road, at my shows. The first night I played “Earnhardt”, as soon as we finished, there was this guy who somehow made it up Continue reading →
