  • Winners of the 2020 ACM Awards and Show Recap

    countrymusicnewsblog.com Friday, 18 September 2020 00:33:22

In an unprecedented broadcast, the 2020 ACM Awards managed to convey the loneliness and hopeful spirit we’ve all shared as a nation as we wait out this pandemic. Empty seats in venues all across Nashville represented the vast array of spaces that seem to be holding their breath just waiting for fans to be allowed back in. But in those empty spaces, artists seemed even more raw and real than ever. Miranda Lambert made us promises from the Bluebird, while Old Dominion threw speeches out the window and spoke their painful truths. Luke Bryan gave one of his best award show performances to date, as if he knew how badly we all needed a win, and even Carrie Underwood managed to take her energy level up ten-fold to do justice to the women of country she came to honor. All in all, it may be our favorite award show of all time, and although the seats were empty, the fans were still well-represented. Without further ado, the winners of the 202 American Country Music Awards are: ENTERTAINER OF THE YEARLuke BryanEric ChurchLuke CombsThomas Rhett — WINNER/TIECarrie Underwood — WINNER/TIE FEMALE ARTIST OF THE YEARKelsea BalleriniMiranda LambertMaren Morris — WINNERKacey MusgravesCarrie Underwood MALE ARTIST OF THE YEARDierks BentleyLuke Combs — WINNERThomas RhettChris StapletonKeith Urban DUO OF THE YEARBrooks & DunnBrothers OsborneDan + Shay — WINNERFlorida Georgia LineMaddie & Tae GROUP OF THE YEARLady ALittle Big TownMidlandOld Dominion — WINNERThe Highwomen NEW FEMALE ARTIST OF THE YEARIngrid AndressGabby BarrettLindsay EllCaylee HammackTenille Townes — WINNER NEW MALE ARTIST OF THE YEARJordan DavisRussell DickersonRiley Green — WINNERCody JohnsonMorgan Wallen ALBUM OF THE YEARCenter Point Road – Thomas RhettGIRL – Maren MorrisHeartache Medication – Jon PardiWhat You See Is What You Get – Luke Combs — WINNERWildcard – Miranda Lambert SINGLE OF THE YEAR“God’s Country” – Blake Shelton — WINNER“One Man Band” – Old Dominion“Rainbow” – Kacey Musgraves“Rumor” – Lee Brice“What If I Never Get Over You” – Lady Antebellum SONG OF THE YEAR“10,000 Hours” – Dan + Shay feat. • Taylor Swift and the Seven-Year Itch

    countrymusicnewsblog.com Wednesday, 16 September 2020 22:56:43

Australian philosopher Rudolf Steiner had a popular theory that every person life can be broken down into 7-year cycles, based on their astrology. That we tend to change jobs, locations, and even relationships based around that 7-year itch to start anew. Whether there is any truth in that is up to the big heads of the room to debate, but it sure seems that way when you look at country music’s big news today. Taylor Swift is set to make her return to tonight’s ACM Awards broadcast for the first time in SEVEN Years which leads us to question… are country fans having it? Her big breakup with the country music machine made headlines all over the world. Blogs and business journals railed against her. Pop fans welcomed her with open arms. Radio stations had no idea what to do with her until the fans called in to select “their share” of her catalog. But Taylor just went on writing, recording, producing, and releasing. She had a few choice words to say about coming up in the ranks as a country music princess, then she left us all behind like we never mattered at all. And now she’s back. Her new track “Betty” is getting a prime time premiere on an award show she didn’t want to be a part of, and we’re all supposed to herald her return like a saint’s homecoming when there are other artists who have worked all year and paid their dues through community participation and fan dedication who would likely be far more entitled to this niche airtime. It makes a hardcore country music fan wonder what was going on behind the scenes when they planned tonight’s show? Who got the bump to make room for the wayward wanderer? I’m sure Princess Tay’s presence on the show will be great for ratings, but to me it’s just another reminder that the country music machine is made to crush people in its’ cogs, not support them as they rise.

  • Jessie Buckley and her band Jessie & The Leonards release powerful video for frontline workers

    countrymusicnewsblog.com Tuesday, 15 September 2020 22:49:20

Watch the video here: https://youtu.be/OW1iHv12eZc Proceeds to (Royal College Of Nursing) RCN Foundation “I am beyond grateful for absolutely everything the NHS workers have done. They are warriors. But being a warrior comes with its own challenges. It’s scary, it’s tiring, it’s heart-breaking, it’s lonely, it’s the rawest and strongest of what humanity is” Jessie Buckley Performed by the BAFTA-nominated actor and singer Jessie Buckley and her band ‘Jessie and The Leonards’, written by Kate St John and Neill MacColl and featuring Hannah Grace Deller, the song is a powerful representation of life on the NHS frontline. Inspired by Hannah’s photographs of life as a frontline nurse during the Covid-19 crisis, ‘Working On The Frontline’ is the first release from the album ‘Song Club’, a collection of songs by award-winning songwriters – including Nick Heyward, Graham Gouldman, Beth Nielsen Chapman, Mark Nevin and Kathryn Williams – that celebrate frontline workers and document a poignant moment in time Speaking about the song Jessie Buckley said “While the sky was falling we spoke from distant places, hoping we were all ok and worrying when we weren’t, wondering if or when we might be able to meet again to play music. The whole world was upside down. Neill MacColl and Kate St. John, my amazing and talented beautiful soul-friends found a way to put a chink of light in the shutters and get the band back together. More importantly they have written a great song that tells a very honest and raw story of what it has meant to be on the front line as an NHS worker during the Covid pandemic. I hope that we and our governments are awake to the incredible, invaluable force that is the NHS.  I can’t love Kate and Neill and Hannah enough for making this song happen. I hope the world will listen.” Neill & Kate said: “Working on The Front Line is written from the point of view of a frontline NHS worker, to convey some sense of the reality of what it’s like to work on a Covid ward. The inspiration for the song came from the photographs of hospital workers taken by Hannah Grace Deller, talking to her about her own experiences of working as a nurse at St. Mary’s Hospital and reading first-hand accounts by other frontline nurses. Matter of fact, uplifting and hard-hitting…the words are theirs put into song. Curated by Chris Difford, the ‘Song Club album’ is inspired by Hannah’s photography on the frontline. In addition to being a paediatric matron Hannah is a talented photographer who, throughout the Covid-19 pandemic, has been documenting her and her colleagues’ experiences.  When Hannah’s photographic work was featured on the Channel 4 programme ‘Grayson’s Art Club’, it grabbed the attention of the Squeeze co-founder and Grammy nominated and double Ivor Novello Award winning lyricist. “I first saw Hannah’s photography on Grayson Perry’s Channel Four program ‘Art Club’. Lockdown provided some great TV moments and this was one of them. Inspired by her work I asked all Continue reading Jessie Buckley and her band Jessie & The Leonards release powerful video for frontline workers

  • Josh Abbott Band To Release New Album, The Highway Kind, On November 13, 2020

    countrymusicnewsblog.com Tuesday, 15 September 2020 22:14:21

Listen to the title track off the  album now here: smarturl.it/HighwayKind  Pre-Order available now: linktr.ee/JoshAbbottBand Josh Abbott Band will release their new album The Highway Kind on November 13, 2020.   The band released the title track from the album here: smarturl.it/HighwayKind.  The follow-up to 2017’s string and horn-infused Until My Voice Goes Out, the uplifting 10-track album was recorded at Sonic Ranch in El Paso and produced by Marshall Altman (Marc Broussard, Frankie Ballard, Aaron Watson). The Highway Kind finds lead singer Josh Abbott embracing life as a loving husband and doting father of two after 12 years as a road warrior and frontman of his country band.  The music reflects Abbott’s his newfound purpose as a father and a husband.  While making the record, Abbott and his wife relocated from Austin to Nashville for three months where he embraced the collaborative songwriting scene.  Abbott dubs the new album “the first real, true band album experience” that they have recorded. The band hunkered down at the famed Texas studio for two weeks in mid-2019 where their musicianship evolved as they worked closely with Altman.  Abbott adds, “The Highway Kind is the album I wish we had put out seven years ago. The lyrics, the melodies, the subtle touches; this album is the very best effort from our group. These songs were brought to life and curated to reflect where my life is now: happy, fulfilled, blessed. From love songs to songs about friendship, from ballads to bangers, this album has it all.  They’re true-life songs. I hope people listen to this record and go, ‘Man, Josh is in a really good place around now.’”  Songs like tender ballad “Settle Me Down,” about a partner who always has your back, and the hopeful “The Luckiest,” the namesake of his son Luck, exemplify this undeniable happiness.  Infectious lead single “Little More You,” previously featured on 2019’s Catching Fire EP and penned by Troy Cartwright, Benjy Davis and Neil Medley, exemplifies a tried-and-true relationship while highlighting JAB’s ace musicianship. Memorable album closer “Old Men & Rain” and the vivid “Women & Wishes,” which Abbott penned about his wife for an upcoming event they plan to host together annually to raise money for female entrepreneurs, further exemplify JAB’s “true-life songs.” Meanwhile, “Old Men & Rain” was inspired while spending time with his wife’s grandfather at a sale barn and observing the conversation between older farmers and ranchers over lunch following the auction.   In addition to the heartfelt ballads of love, Josh Abbott Band’s energetic live show is highlighted throughout The Highway Kind. The feel-good honky tonk song “One More Two Step” is about keeping the party going in your living room long after last call while the Jon Pardi-penned barn burner “24-7-365” ups the ante and the rowdiness for a memorable throwdown.  Having spent countless nights on the road together for over a decade, “The Highway Kind” best describes JAB and where the group is headed. Penned by Erik Dylan, Jon Randall and Troy Cartwright, the song came into play at the Continue reading Josh Abbott Band To Release New Album, The Highway Kind, On November 13, 2020

  • Wade Bowen Surprises Fans with New EP “The Waiting”

    countrymusicnewsblog.com Friday, 4 September 2020 20:43:54

Featuring long-awaited studio recordings of fan favorites, including “Who I Am” Country star and Red Dirt hero Wade Bowen just pulled off a huge surprise, releasing a brand new (and previously unannounced) EP featuring studio recordings of some of his biggest live-only favorites. THE WAITING features six tracks, including several that have become Bowen staples at live shows, like his runaway hit “Who I Am.”  One of the first songs he ever wrote, “Who I Am” has become an iconic moment in every Wade Bowen show. A 2003 live recording from Lubbock’s famed venue The Blue Light Live has organically garnered more than 12 million streams and is one of Bowen’s most popular songs on streaming platforms. It’s also one of the most-used “first dance” songs at weddings across the Lone Star State. The appropriately titled THE WAITING in part references the nearly two-decade wait to hear studio versions of some of these songs, but fans don’t have to wait another second to listen to them. “I figured folks have been waiting long enough to hear these songs,” Wade Bowen says. “We’ve all been playing “the waiting game” and I couldn’t think of a better way to thank my fans than to put this EP out as soon as I had it in my hands.” After earning such an enduring place in every Bowen fan’s heart, “Who I Am” finally gets the studio treatment on THE WAITING, along with three other fan favorites, a Phil Collins cover, and a new song “Fairest Lady” (written with Brent Cobb), all of which Bowen has only ever performed live. Never one to twiddle his thumbs, Bowen took the pandemic-enforced lull in live performing as an opportunity to still bring a bit of that “live performance” experience to fans, albeit in a reimagined way. “Recording this project during the pandemic was both a fun and frustrating experience” says Bowen. He and his band recorded the main tracks together in the same room at Gruene Records recording studio in New Braunfels, TX. Then, musicians in Austin and Nashville recorded the steel guitar, background vocals, and keyboards, sending parts and overdubs back and forth to Bowen and company via email. “I usually am in the room while every part of my record is being played but due to circumstances beyond my control that wasn’t possible,” Bowen concedes. “So giving up that control was a little nerve-racking.” Even in unfamiliar territory, the hard-working troubadour still finds a way to bring his unmistakable style to THE WAITING. Surprise albums are rare, and Bowen becomes one of the first artists from the vaunted Texas scene to release a new record without an official announcement. Bowen playfully teased the title on social media a few days ago, captioning a post with, “We’ve all been playing The Waiting game for a while now. Tryin’ to make the best of it. Stay tuned.” Bowen hit the ground running in the early 2000s and never stopped to look back. He has released a steady stream of records, averaging nearly an album a year over the past 6 Continue reading Wade Bowen Surprises Fans with New EP “The Waiting”
