    soccereelz.blogspot.com | Tue, 11 Sep 2018 13:59:00 +0000

    Writer : Moses Iluebbey

We've seen lots and lots of great players over the years in the epl and to fit just five into a team is a difficult ask but here we go

    1. Peter Schmeichel - Extraordinary shot stopper, feisty, commanded his box very well, strong fists, athletic. He had it all and had about 120+ cleansheets to back it up so definitely had to be on this list

    2. JohnTerry - Fantastic leader, definitely not slow, agile, solid. Captained Chelsea to a host of titles during his time there. Terry has the most clean sheets of any single defender in Premier League history and is also the highest scoring defender in Premier League history.

    3. Patrick Viera - If ever there was a player who could destroy and build-up it was viera. Probably the best box to box midfielder the pl has seen. Could break up play at one end and create at the other. He slightly edges Makele off this list due to his dual functions.

    4. Cristiano Ronaldo - Quick, had flair, great dribbler, great finisher, set piece expert and a desire to entertain. Anything you needed from an attacker was embedded in him. The only way pl player to win the ballon d'or. Definitely had to be on this list.

    And lastly

    5. Thiery Henry - The french man was simply magical. His strength, mazy runs, ability to beat his man , ability to spot a pass, composure in his finishing were what made him stand out as one of the start players for Wenger's invincibles. He was the ultimate forward.

  • WHERE IS MESSI

    soccereelz.blogspot.com | Mon, 10 Sep 2018 16:27:00 +0000

    Writer: Moses Iluebbey

The three man shortlist for the best men's player of the year has been met by mixed reactions from football lovers all over the world mainly for the 'omission' of Lionel Messi. Most of the reactions have been criticism as to why the european golden boot winner didn't make the list and some others defend the decision of FIFA.
Cristiano Ronaldo, Luka Modric and Mohammed salah are the three who make up the shortlist ahead of the argentinian
    So where is Messi
    2017/18
Cristiano Ronaldo - started the season on a high with a goal against Barca in the spanish super cup, got red carded and was handed a five match ban which destabilised both Ronaldo's form and that of Real madrid giving Barca a headstart in the race to the title. Ronaldo struggled to hit form but when he did went on a phenomenal three month goal scoring form between january and march which helped real madrid lift a third Ucl title in a row. He finished as the Ucl top scorer and went on to have a good personal worldcup and finished with four goals despite crashing out in the R16

Luka Modric - An integral part of the Ucl title winning Real side with his intricate passing alongside Toni kroos. However Luka didn't really stand out as a star performer the way Ronaldo did. Luka had a great world cup captaining his side to the silver medal. He was a standout performer for the team alongside Perisic and Rakitic which helped him win the golden ball ahead of the likes of Hazard and Griezmann

Mo Salah - Good individual club campaign, record number of goals in an epl season, epl golden boot. His goals helped liverpool to 4th place in the league and the ucl final which they lost. He got injured in the final and that affected his world cup in which he got two goals and was knocked out in the group stage.

Lionel Messi - La liga top scorer, la liga top assister, Europe top assister , Europe top scorer, He had a not so good ucl campaign but was able to score 6 goals and was eliminated in the quater finals. His goals helped barca to the la liga title and Copa del rey. Messi's world cup however was not as good despite getting a crucial goal which helped Argentina advance from the group stage. They were knocked out in the round of 16

With these comparisons its safe to ask
    Where is Messi?

  • As good as they say?- Piece on Eden Hazard

    soccereelz.blogspot.com | Sat, 08 Sep 2018 14:11:00 +0000

    Writer : Nelson Nnadi

Chelsea's superstar Eden Hazard is arguably one of the best playmakers in present day football. The Belgian genius also passes as an amazing dribbler and this among many other abilities has led many to wonder if he's as good as Messi and Ronaldo.
Football lovers have seen the prestigious ballon d 'or award being won by either Ronaldo or Messi for the past ten years. This development has made many believe that they're the best players to ever kick a ball. However, a few players have been compared to the superb duo and Eden Hazard is one of them. So now we're going to give our thoughts on that question.
*IS HAZARD AS GOOD AS MESSI AND RONALDO*
After a double player of the year award in France's ligue 1, Hazard was seen as one of the hottest prospects in Europe as at the time he signed from Lille. For that reason, expectations were understandably high for the Belgian in his first season at the bridge. A nomination for the pfa award player of the year and young player of the year award, as well as a place in the Premier league team of the season, showed that the youngster matched those expectations and more. Hazard didn't just stop there. He has gone on to help Chelsea lift the EPL a couple of times, the f.a cup once, the capital one cup and not forgetting the Europa league trophy that was won in his first season. Personally, I think Chelsea's success story over the past five years won't be as good as it is if they didn't have their mercurial forward,Eden Hazard. On the international stage, Hazard who is the captain of the Red Devils has shown how important he is since his debut in 2008. He has been an integral part of Belgium's rise to stardom in the recent years. He recently captained the side to a third place finish at the just concluded World Cup bagging the Silver ball award in the Process,an award given to the second best player in the tourney
Hazard's criticism however has been due to the fact that he is not a prolific goalscorer. Truth is Messi and Ronaldo have set the bar very high in terms of goals and assists and to be put in that category you simply have to create and score alot and Hazard is simply not at that level.
Hazard no doubt is world class but definitely a tier below Messi and Ronaldo.
    What do you think?

  • Conte's blues' stunning POTENTIAL XI for next season

    soccereelz.blogspot.com | Sat, 01 Jul 2017 20:49:00 +0000

    Edits:Moses Iluebbey

After a hugely succeessful season winning the league and making it to the finals of the f.a cup in his first season, Antonio Conte,(and his killer 3-4-3 formation) like every other normal human being should expect teams to step up their game whenever they face his team. This clearly justifies reasons why he has visited the transfer market in a bid to bolster his squad
Today we'll be taking a look at what Chelsea's line-up could possibly look like next season
    G.K---:THIBAUT COURTIOUS
Courtious as most of his Chelsea team mates, had a disappointing 2015/16 season. But he bounced back this year in spectacular fashion and went on to win the golden gloves at the end of the season. His talks for a new contract have stalled but with Chelsea not in the  market for a new keeper,(caballero certainly cannot be deemed a keeper) the situation seems to be under control. He should still save his spot as Conte's first choice.
    RCB---:AZPILICUETA
azi played every second for Chelsea last season, getting a goal and 4 assists in the process. He definitely is sure to secure his spot in the xi
    CB---:DAVID LUIZ
The Brazilian's £34m return to the bridge was questioned by most fans. He however, proved critics wrong with his outstanding showings from the heart of the blue defense. This should be enough to guarantee a starting spot come next year
    RCB---:LEONARDO BONUCCI
Conte has stressed his desire to re unite with 1 of the players that kept him going while at both the Azurri and Old lady...Chelsea seems to be the favourites to sign him for a fee around £50-60m
    LWB---:ALEX SANDRO
Conte has expressed his desire to build a team that can play with different styles,Sandro will give him the opportunity to do that. The Brazilian can play as an LMF too and as a proper left back. Reports in Italy claim personal terms have been agreed upon by the two parties for a proposed £60m move
    RWB---:VICTOR MOSES
After series of loan spells,Moses got his long awaited chance under Conte. At the end of the season, it was obvious dat picking moses over experienced stars in the mould of Ivanovic wasn't a bad idea after all.Arguably chelsea's top player for the season although most blues' fans don't really seem to have forgiven him for his unsportsman-like dive against arsenal which they think cost them the f.a cup. Anyway,Conte will be foolish to let such a mistake ruin his team. I still think moses will retain his spot
    CM---:N'GOLO KANTE
Conte has repeated severally that he wants Kante, thereby warding of suspected interests from teams like PSG and why wouldnt he. Voted PFA player of the year, kante replicated his leicester title winning season and some...his £30m move from Leicester proved to b Conte's best decision last summer and will definitely keep his place
    CM---:BAKAYOKO
Chelsea are surely front runners in the race to land Monaco star bakayoko for a fee in the region of £35-40mn and with the Matic  to Man utd deal almost done, a place in the xi awaits him
    RW---:PEDRO
HIs first season in England was a disaster. But he bounced back dis year in style providing 14 goals and 9 assists as he helped his team win the league and reach the f.a cup final
    LW---:EDEN 'HAZARDOUS' HAZARD
Conte's 3-4-3 formation helped to bring out the best from hazard as it provided for less defensive work for the Belgian magician. 17 goals and 9 assists were what he gave conte back for his continouos trust in him. Definitely, he'll be a part of the XI
    ST---:LUKAKU
The big belgian scored 26 goals and made 6 assists. Need i say more to prove his ability? With costa on his way out, chelsea are hot on the heels of the belgian in attempt to bring him back to the bridge
If this team eventually materializes, then England may have just found a team to bring the ucl trophy to the English soil.

  • Renato Sanches.. What went wrong!??!

    soccereelz.blogspot.com | Wed, 21 Jun 2017 10:01:00 +0000

    Writer:Moses Iluebbey
Renato Sanches seemed destined for the very top after starring for Portugal at Euro 2016, but 12 months on he has dropped (not surprisingly) into their U21s after a very difficult first season at Bayern Munich. What exactly has gone wrong for the 19-year-old wonderkid.

This time last year, Renato was busy putting his stamp on Euro 2016. A man-of-the-match display against Croatia in the last-16 was followed by a crucial goal against Poland in the quarter-finals, and then thrilling teenager became the youngest finalist in the competition's history when he started in Portugal's extra-time victory over the hosts at the Stade de France.

With a winners' medal around his neck and the young player of the tournament award in his hands, Sanches departed France with  a long list of admirers. "Renato is going to be a fantastic player," said Portugal manager Fernando Santos after his heroics at the Euros

By that point, Bayern Munich had already beaten Manchester United and a host of other top clubs to his signature for an initial fee of £27.5m. The all-action midfielder had only played 30 senior games for boyhood club Benfica, but his explosive performances in Portugal had sent ripples across Europe.

He only actually made his debut in October, a couple of months into that season,so, nobody really knew much about him, but from the moment he broke into the team he was just absolutely sensational

Benfica had started the campaign slowly, losing league games to Arouca, Sporting Lisbon and Porto and suffering a Champions League defeat to Galatasaray in those early months of 2015/16, but they rapidly improved with the introduction of the dreadlocked tyro from their academy

Renato brought so much raw energy and pace. He revolutionised a midfield that was looking laboured. He would pick the ball up deep in his own half and carry the team forward practically on his own. He was (almost) unstoppable."

By January, big clubs were circling. People felt there was too much hype around him (and i definitely thought so too) but I think I would agree that if it wasn't for Renato Sanches, Benfica probably wouldn't have won the championship that season.

Renato Sanches made his Benfica debut in October 2015
Renato Sanches made his Benfica debut in October 2015

Bayern Munich witnessed Sanches' ability first-hand when they faced Benfica in the next round of the Champions League, and their subsequent deal to sign him looked like even more of a coup after those dazzling displays at the Euros. Sanches went straight into Bayern's team, starting four of their first six Bundesliga games, but the opportunities dried up as he struggled to adapt.

Carlo Ancelotti insisted the youngster would get his chance, but by the end of the season he had only started nine games in all competitions - and only two since December. When he was omitted from Portugal's Confederations Cup squad and selected for the U21s instead, it didn't come as much of a surprise.

"I think the main reason he struggled is that he is still so young," says Torben Hoffman, a former Bayer Leverkusen and 1860 Munich defender who now covers Bayern for Sky in Germany. "He has had problems with the language and found it hard to integrate with the team. There is also a lot of competition for places at Bayern."

From being an undisputed starter at Benfica, Sanches found himself vying with Xabi Alonso, Arturo Vidal and Thiago Alcantara in the unfamiliar surroundings of the Allianz Arena. The problem is that you basically have to be the finished article at a club like bayern. He was learning so much playing at benfica every week, it was the perfect environment for him to develop, but he was a still a rough diamond with flaws in his game. Portugal is well known for producing precocious young talents who get sold before they are the finished article. That's what happened with him."

And so, in the Polish city of Bydgoszcz about 2 weeks ago, almost a year to the day since his first appearance of Euro 2016, Sanches found himself on the bench for Portugal's European U21 Championship opener against Serbia. He showed his rustiness with some misplaced passes after his second-half introduction, but the brilliant assist for their late second goal was a reminder of his quality.

That raw talent, the natural ability that once caused so much excitement, has never been in doubt. But while Sanches remains a thrilling player with plenty of time to get his career back on track, those who have followed him closely in Germany find it difficult to see past the roadblocks at Bayern.

Bayern have just gone out and spent another 40m euros on Tolisso. People were hoping he might get more of a chance now thqt Alonso is retiring, but it's going to be difficult again. Perhaps if he gets more minutes with the U21s, he can win back his confidence and persuade a club like United to come back in for him."

Right now, however, Sanches looks like a cautionary tale for young players emerging on the big stage. Looking back, it was simply too much, too soon. Rediscovering the form that catapulted him into the spotlight 12 months ago will not be straightforward.
What do you feel is the way forward for this dreadlocked bundle of raw talent

  • NIGERIA 0-2 RSA.... upset??.... really???

    soccereelz.blogspot.com | Tue, 13 Jun 2017 23:21:00 +0000

    Writer:Moses Iluebbey
Overall i have to say, a very dull match with 5 exciting moments moments; with South Africa creating 4 out of the 5. SA got two goals, and hit the woodwork twice while the super eagles had a goal mouth scuffle that looked like a threat to the SA goal for about half a second....
I hear a lot of people saying the match was an upset..but was it really?..well, the match was played in Nigeria so that makes it look like a huge victory for the south africans..secondly the super eagles had 2 weeks to prepare while bafana bafana had 3 days (definite tie breaker right??)....
Then i hear of the callibre of players ..foreign based players in the Nigerian squad. Well let's look at those foreign based players ...Alex Iwobi- the arsenal STAR who spent the second half or so of the epl season struggling to make appearances for the first team...Kelechi Iheanacho- need i say much??..the man city striker clearly not in Guardiola's plan for city  made a few subs appearances and even much less starts 4 city  last season...next step up Mr newly wedded Ahmed Musa- the sought after cska moscow star chose  leicester city and I personally felt he made the perfect decision and he looked very sharp in his first few games for the foxes but his perfomances deteriorated and Raineri got sacked and Shakespeare clearly had no plans 4 Musa;he struggled as well to get playing time..Onazi definitely since his broken leg has not been the same energetic player....Echejile is definitely not as sharp as he used to...Ndidi quite unlike these others, is the first choice of Shakespeare at Leicester and he definitely showed match sharpness as did Moses Simon..
The players of the SA team on the other hand are first choice in their various clubs as such where definitely more match fitter than their Nigerian counterparts
In all,  the match was disappointing for the Nigerians but from concise analysis like this,  expected
What do you think... Upset or not??!?

  • Epl... BEST LEAGUE IN THE WORLD?!??

It is natural for supporters of a certain club to say the domestic of their club is the best.. Well, the epl has the highest number of supportable teams so i guess they have the upper hand if we are using that criteria but why does the English Premier League standout from others???.. Easy
Quite unlike the other European leagues(i dont think there is really any need of involving leagues outside Europe) the difference in the QUALITY of the top 8 clubs is really not much... Yes yes some will disagree but lets look at it this way.... West brom vs the current champions Chelsea at the hawthorns... Definitely west brom will be looking to get all three points and if they do,  no one considers it a huge upset...but in other leagues, well we all know the celebrations that will happen
Also  Spain,  germany,  Italy, france,   the other four of the five major  European leagues have seen a combined number of 6 clubs lift their domestic trophies in the past 5 years while England alone in the past 5 years has seen 4 champions(one of them being LEICESTER city)
Then we have the issue of tv rights.. I mean I would definitely sit down to watch relegated Sunderland vs watford.... But think about 90mins of deportivo vs gijon or chievo vs palermo or freiburg vs ingolstadt or even bordeaux and rennes.. I will definitely not wish such agony on anyone
But its also important to note that these English teams have a LONG way to go before they can match up to the best in the above listed leagues hence their constant early exits from the ucl
    WHICH IS YOUR FAVORITE LEAGUE???

  • Kylian Mbappe....Overated???

I actually first heard of this boy this season..i havent watched him much but i watched his game against juve in the ucl semis and i was disgusted at how much praise was heaped on him and how much he was hyped pre match and i decided to look into it.....
Well...  exactly 3 days older than him although am still looking for my first cap for any professional team...
Anyway i watched his earlier ucl games and his ligue 1 games and the thing that struck me was CONFIDENCE.....at his age?..i mean, i dont expect someone of that age to demand the ball to be played to his feet so often.....his style is similar to the great thierry henry...am sure that is what attracted wenger to this young boy...his speed, ability to dribble, agility, mental sharpness...puts him a foot above his age grade...I can only pray that he makes his decision on where to move next with great caution as that will determine if he ll live up to the Henry-like potential within

With 15 goals and 8 assists in 29 games,if you are still not satisfied just ask spurs
    MY CONCLUSION: definitely NOT overated

    What is yours????

The season which began with a new manager and big money signings ended with...a sixth place finish in the league, the shield, efl cup trophy, europa league trophy and champions league qualification for next season....
I chose to write on united because there has been a lot of mixed reactions coming from managers and players throwing jabs and sly digs at united and belittling their achievements.....well I think any one who wants to be impartial will agree with me that united's season has been a HUGE success
    1. United faced the most injury woes in the league from shaw to young to ibra to pogba to martial ...the list really is endless and it was a continuous cycle through the season
    2. With these injuries, they played more games than any other side in the league
    3. United fielded the highest number of starting line ups due to injuries thereby reducing compatibility
    4. United as a normally attacking minded side was being managed by a defensively minded coach...4 d first time
I also hear criticism directed at pogba ..but i ll like for those criticizing to call 5 central midfielders who came to england and in his first season scored more than 10 goals
Some may see this as excuses but i think these are inexcusable facts
On to rafa benitez who says europa is not a serious cup...https://www.google.com.ng/amp/www.independent.co.uk/sport/football/european/rafa-benitezs-parting-gift-for-chelsea-europa-league-glory-for-the-blues-8618073.html%3Famp ......here he was validating his time at chelsea using the europa league..
United can do better than they are doing right now with better commitment from the players but it is unimaginable to me to say their season was dissapointing....
What do you think of united's season???

    REAL MADRID 4 -1 JUVENTUS
Sad scenes in cardiff from the juve players but how did the best defence in the ucl concede 4 in one game

It was supposed to be the most solid defense(juve) vs the most vicious attack(real) but in the opening 10 or so minutes of the game, the two sides seemed to switch roles with juve coming close to opening the scoring
But come to think of it.....which side did this role reversal favour?
From the scoreline at full time,I think that question has been answered...Real madrid as any follower of soccer knows is a side less concerned with the number of goals they concede but rather aim to score more than they concede..Quite unlike regular clubs which crumble when they concede, real uses it as motivation which makes me wonder why Allegri chose to start the game the way he did.....After juve's ten minute spell was over,it was clear which team would power on to victory
The biggest mistake of the game was juve playing real the way they did with barca and well..they can only have themselves and their coach to blame
The standout players for me were ...of course CASEMEIRO....KROOS...MODRIC...yes no ronaldo
He scored two fantastic goals but those 3 won real the match by succesfully bullying pjanic and dybala
Better luck to juve next time tho......
    Who were your standout players???
